So, you want to back up your data. There are many ways to skin a cat, but here are a few of the options we suggest.

Backup Using a Cloud Storage Provider

  • Google Drive (15GB free storage)
  • Box (10GB free storage)
  • OneDrive (5GB free storage)
  • Amazon Drive (5GB free storage)
  • Microsoft One Drive (5GB free storage)
  • Dropbox (2GB free storage)

These services may offer more storage at an additional cost.

Backup Using Local Storage

No matter what someone says, don't use USB over IP to mount a flash drive or external SSD. It isn't meant for high bandwidth storage operations.

  1. Install Zerotier. Zerotier is a split tunnel VPN that connects your local machine to Shadow. This isn't like a normal VPN that breaks Shadow if setup properly.
    1. Download Zerotier
    2. Open Zerotier Central and login with Google.
    3. Click Create A Network. Zerotier will assign you a random two-word network name that you can click into.
    4. Open Zerotier. It will go to your Windows task tray.
    5. Right click the orange Zerotier icon, and click Join Network...
    6. Take the network ID at the top of the page in your network in Zerotier Central, and paste it into the add network box. DO NOT CHANGE ANY OF THE CHECKBOXES OR YOU MAY BRICK YOUR SHADOW'S NETWORKING
    7. In Zerotier central, you should see a new device in the members section. That's the computer you just added. Give it a name, and tick the auth box to allow it to connect.
    8. Repeat this guide, omitting the part where you created a network. Download, run, add network, same network ID, name, auth.
    9. Now you should have two devices in Zerotier with managed IPs. These are the IPs that you will use, not the physical IPs.
  2. Setup SMB to map drives across the Internet
